Introducing the Scholda Style Sponge, the first totally new sponge profile since 1987. The Scholda style is the first design based on a geometric model of the forces of scleral buckling.

Created in cooperation with Dr. Christoph Scholda, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Vienna, Austria

Design Criteria
A buckle is formed by the resultant vector pressures created by sutures on the silicone elements, as well as by the shape and size of the element itself. The ideal element consists of two parts. The inner part should produce an effective indentation with a distinct radius. The outer portion should provide a fulcrum for the sutures, but should not alter the globe. This can only be achieved with a convex outer portion of a fixed radius. The ideal radius of both parts can be determined by mathematical modeling using the factors illustrated here.

The resulting sponge creates an intraocular buckle similar to that of a 5mm Round Sponge but with a significant reduction in the extraocular height.

Wong Forceps

Labtician Wide Strips for Scleral Buckling

The Labtician Wide Strips offer adequate, but not excessive, width of vitreous base support equally in all quadrants. These strips are designed for use in conjunction with vitrectomy when vitrectomy is used as the primary treatment of retinal breaks. They are particularly useful in cases when there are inferior or large retinal defects and additional prophylaxis is needed. Labtician Wide Strips are made from a soft silicone formulation to help prevent erosion.
